NZ Opera School Programmes
Our goal at New Zealand Opera is to ignite a passion that will last a lifetime and foster young talent and enthusiasm along the way. We involve future audiences by offering a range of learning pathways, including live performance and interactive creative workshops. These opportunities enable young people to participate in and engage with different aspects of opera and the performing arts.
If you are a teacher who wants to give your students exposure to any aspect of opera, please contact NZ Opera directly on email@example.com
To further assist the process of introducing children and young adults to opera, New Zealand Opera offers school groups the chance to attend Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington dress rehearsals at a special schools rate of $10 per student. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to be introduced to the world of professional opera in New Zealand.

The perfect addition to a performing arts, music or drama course, Explore Opera brings storytelling to life. This free and highly engaging half-day workshop is delivered by members of NZ Opera’s artistic team at your school. We work with your students to unpack and explore one of the mainstage shows being performed this year. Plot, characters and music are all explored. We will learn music from the opera and also create our own scenes and music. You can book this workshop in conjunction with the dress rehearsal tickets, so your students can take part in the workshop and then go to the opera!
Design Creative Workshops
Since 2000, NZ Opera has offered up to 20 students each from two schools the opportunity to work with a set and costume designer over a period of three days to experience developing a full production from scratch. Scale models of production designs and costume mock-ups are created and displayed in a local library before moving to the theatre foyer for the opera season. The workshop includes a backstage tour and dress rehearsal ticket. Suitable for Years 7 and 8.
In July 2015, in collaboration with Core Education’s LEARNZ project, we presented Opera - Put On a Show, a virtual field trip. This unique insight into the world of opera centred round the Christchurch season of Madama Butterfly in the Isaac Theatre Royal. 2,500 children from 106 schools around the country engaged with opera, meeting members of the cast and crew and learning about all the different elements that make a production such as Madama Butterfly come to life.
Following on from our successful collaboration with LEARNZ in 2015, we’re delighted to be able to offer your students an introduction to the world and industry of opera again in 2016. Focused on the opening season of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the St James Theatre in Wellington, this journey will go backstage for a behind the scenes look at this exciting production. Student Internship & Work Experience Opportunities
Does your school have a work experience programme? We are always keen to share what we do and help students explore different career paths. Get in touch to learn more about opportunities to gain practical experience in stage management, artistic administration and other areas of our work.
If you are in Year 11 or 12, have an interest in the arts you want to share, we want to hear from you! We are looking for enthusiastic, outgoing, and friendly students to join our Ambassador Programme. We will give you a taste of professional theatre-making and help you to develop skills in leadership, communication, collaboration and organisation, so that you can become a New Zealand Opera ambassador in your school. Our Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers, but will be rewarded with many great incentives such as access to our dress rehearsals and Ambassador-only events.
