The National Tour

This century-old take on a popular Grimm fairytale is ever true today, as the audience follows Hansel and Gretel along the overgrown path from childhood innocence to adult awareness.

This production of Hansel and Gretel boasts an all New Zealand cast and creative team. Director Michael Hurst and mezzo-soprano Helen Medlyn (who plays both witch and mother) are Arts Foundation Laureates. Two rising stars, soprano Ana James and mezzo-soprano Anna Pierard, play Gretel and Hansel respectively.

The production will tour to 15 centres, from Kerikeri to Invercargill. New Zealander Tecwyn Evans, who has worked with many of the great British opera companies and festivals over the past decade, and Michael Vinten, The NBR New Zealand Opera's highly regarded Associate Conductor (Wellington), will share the conducting. Associate players from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra will join us for the North Island part of the tour and, in our first collaboration with the Christchurch Symphony, their players will join us for the South Island leg.
