Dark thrills in a devilish drama
The legend of Faust, the man who sold his soul to the devil, has its most powerful telling in Gounod's opera. In the ultimate battle of good and evil comes a passionate drama of unconscionable choices and heartbreaking consequences, told through a score full of famous music that conveys the story's electrifying emotions.
The Genesis Energy Spring Season of Gounod's Faust brings together a superb international and New Zealand creative team and opera cast in a sumptuous and profoundly compelling production lead by English Director Mike Ashman and French Conductor Emmanuel Joel-Hornak.
Making his debut in the title role is Australian-based Korean tenor Jaewoo Kim, a star of last year's Don Giovanni. Alongside him are Russian bass Mikhail Svetlov as Méphistophélès, and stunning French soprano Anne Sophie Duprels as Marguerite. Several fine New Zealand singers take leading roles including the highly-acclaimed and versatile singer, Helen Medlyn in the role of the widow, Marthe Schwerlein.
Melodramatic and satisfyingly indulgent - Faust promises the most devilishly entertaining night out of 2006.
