TOSCA
POWER, PASSION, POSSESSION.
AN ITALIAN TALE OF COURAGE AND BETRAYAL
In Tosca, love, loyalty, and patriotism swirl in a world of oppression and betrayal.
A passionate drama with intriguing characters and the thrilling music of Puccini make
Tosca an absolute must-see.
During a tense and dangerous time in Italy's history, the young painter Cavaradossi shields an escaped patriot, Angelotti. This act of rebellion draws Cavaradossi into a world of political turmoil and personal peril - for himself and for his lover, Tosca, the fiery and jealous prima donna.
Scarpia, the power-corrupted police chief, presents peril to them both as he schemes to possess Tosca and crush his enemies. Tosca finds the courage to fight back, but then she must struggle to save Cavaradossi's life.
Renowned New Zealand soprano Margaret Medlyn takes the stage in the great title role, along with the captivating Mexican tenor Rafael Rojas in his New Zealand debut as Cavaradossi, and noted New Zealand bass Rodney Macann as Scarpia.
Puccini's music captures every detail of the drama and creates a vocal showcase for the characters with famed arias such as "Vissi d'Arte" and "E Lucevan le Stelle". Music of thrilling intensity heightens the spectacle.
One of Scottish Opera's most popular and acclaimed productions, the Tosca, with its powerful 1940s Italian setting created by Anthony Besch, comes to the New Zealand stage for the first time.
Romance, spectacle and high emotion - Tosca is what red-blooded Italian opera is all about.
The opening nights of Tosca in Wellington and Auckland are gala charity performances. Tickets to these two performances are subject to a $10.00 donation with all proceeds going directly to the Genesis Oncology Trust.
