THE BARBER OF SEVILLE
FAST, FUN, RAZOR SHARP.
DECEPTION, DISGUISES, THE BARBER SURPRISES
The NBR New Zealand Opera blazes a trail with its first touring production, taking
one of the most joyous of all operas to new audiences, in a collaboration with Class
Act Opera. On this regional tour, the first in more than 20 years, The Barber of Seville
will reach a far-flung audience in nine centres.
A specially formed ensemble of New Zealand's finest singers, backed by players from the NGC Wellington Sinfonia or the Auckland Philharmonia, capture the energy of this breezy comedy.
The fast-moving plots of Rossini's masterpiece are played out against some of the most memorable tunes, and funniest scenes, in opera.
Figaro is more than a barber of quality - he's one of Seville's movers and shakers, the man you ask when you've got a tricky job that needs doing. That is why he gets called in to help a lovestruck nobleman woo the beauty Rosina from her tyrannical guardian, Dr Bartolo.
Disguises, deceptions, and some razor-sharp manoeuvrings by Figaro follow as true love seeks to triumph over the schemers who'd like to thwart it. Few operas are more sheer fun than this deliciously witty tale.
"The singing is superb, the acting a delight, the production a winner ..."
Rod Biss, The Sunday Star Times
"An absolute comic and musical triumph for all involved that should not be missed."
Andrew Buchanan-Smart, The Waikato Times
"... the ensemble bubbles with precision and pizzaz ..."
John Button, The Dominion Post
