We talk to William Abel, one of the members of our chorus of street urchins.

Earlier this month, 12-year-old William Abel was in the audience for one of our Opera in Schools productions of Don Pasquale.  In a couple of months time, William will share the stage with that cast, as one of 12 members of the children’s chorus who’ll be performing on stage at the ASB Theatre as part of our Auckland season.  And while he may be young, William – who attends Kristin School – has been singing for half his life.  Ahead of rehearsals starting in Auckland, we caught up with William to talk about singing, school and Shrek.

When and why did you start singing?

I started singing lessons at home when I was six years old and now have a great singing teacher at Kristin.  I've been with her for five years.  I thought it would be a good idea to start singing because I wanted to share a talent that wasn't academically related.  It helps that I can sing and that I enjoy it.

You've already been in a lot of productions. What has been your highlight so far?

I guess you could say my first play was the Christmas Pageant at Kristin Kindergarten. I was the Inn Keeper and I had one line.  My highlight so far would definitely be performing in Evita with Auckland Music Theatre Company. I got to perform with some of my friends which was fun as we share a common interest.  I thought that the talent was great and I got to see the inner workings of a musical production. Watching Evita as a member of the audience gave me a lot of pride as I got to see the hard work put in and it was something much bigger than myself.

Were you nervous during your audition for Carmen?

I was pretty nervous as I  was worried I wouldn't perform as well as I had done in my practice at home and during the audition I wasn't as nervous.

What are you looking forward to about Carmen?

I'm really looking forward to learning those iconic songs that I've heard so many times before but never realised they belonged to Carmen.  I'm looking forward to getting to know people with the same shared interest as me.

Do you have a favourite production or musical?

I loved performing in Shrek as part of the Kristin Middle School Production last year as it was one of my favourite movies and it was interesting to see how it was adapted into a musical.

What's your dream role?

My dream role would have to be playing one of the leads in Les Misérables.

Away from singing and piano and school, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love drawing, gaming and inventing science-based projects and playing football.

What do you want to do when you leave school?

I would love to be an artist or an inventor.
