The New Zealand Opera Foundation has been established to be a major long-term source of financial support for opera in New Zealand. The Foundation's mission is to encourage and support opera at a professional level and to nurture the special vocal talents and creative skills that opera needs.
Taking a lead from overseas arts organisations, the Foundation has introduced bequest funding to stand alongside benefaction and other fundraising. Bequest supporters, as part of their estate planning, are able to make an enduring contribution to the future of opera without putting at risk their everyday commitments. The Foundation's experienced trustees manage a secure fund, interest from which helps support NZO's activities on an independent basis. Bequest supporters have a number of options to choose from.
This is a new way for opera lovers to support a timeless art form, and the bequest programme is steadily growing. It also has significance for the kinds of opera you will see. The Foundation will work to make it possible to widen and vary what is performed, all the while upholding high standards. In time, the Foundation's contribution will create the opportunity for NZO to present seldom-performed or more ambitious works with cast and creative teams of the highest quality.

On average, an opera will last between 2 and 3 hours, with one interval in a two act show, and two in a three act show. Operettas and musicals tend to be shorter.
