NZ Opera Community Projects

At New Zealand Opera, we are passionate about introducing people of all ages to opera. There are many ways you can connect with us, both at our place and out in the community.

Join us and be part of the magic of opera. At the heart of NZ Opera’s vision is our commitment to providing opportunities for New Zealanders to discover the world of opera. We aim to bring the human stories and glorious music of this unique art form to all.

Pre-Show Talks

Pre-Show Talks

Free and open to all ticket-holders, Pre-Show Talks are presented by a member of the NZ Opera team prior to mainstage performances (with the exception of opening night). Guaranteed to enhance your experience of a night at the opera, these talks provide a fascinating insight into the history of the opera, the composer and the production. No registration necessary, just come along on the night.

Open Day

Open Day

Biennially, NZ Opera throws open the doors of the Onehunga Technical Centre, the company’s technical HQ. You will get a behind-the-scenes look inside the workshop where sets are crafted, the wardrobe department where costumes are designed and made, as well as the rehearsal spaces where all the action takes place. Meet the talented crew who make ideas come to life.

Involvement in the Community

We are committed to working within our communities to share our love of opera with as wide an audience as possible. In addition to our Pre-Show Talks and Open Days, we work with a range of partners across New Zealand to bring opera to new audiences. Here is a taster of what we have been working on recently and a sneak peek of what we have to come ...

OPEN STAGE. AN OPERATIC SING-A-LONG
Christchurch Transitional Cathedral

In 2015, we gave hundreds of Christchurch residents the opportunity to join our Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus for the day. Participants took part in a workshop with chorus members and then enjoyed their moment in the spotlight singing the popular 'Brindisi' chorus from La Traviata and other favourites from the operatic repertoire.
