What is opera?
The Oxford English dictionary tells us that opera is, ‘A dramatic work in one or more acts, set to music for singers and instrumentalists.’ Simply put, opera – the Italian word for ‘work’ - is a story told through words and music.

Glossary of Opera Terms
- To sing softly, at less than full voice. During rehearsals singers may ‘mark’ their parts to avoid straining their voices
- Literally ‘middle soprano’. The voice is lower than that of a soprano but higher than that of a contralto
