The Oxford English dictionary tells us that opera is, ‘A dramatic work in one or more acts, set to music for singers and instrumentalists.’  Simply put, opera – the Italian word for ‘work’ - is a story told through words and music.

Glossary of Opera Terms

Designers:
The creative team who devise the sets, costumes, make-up, wigs and lighting for a particular production
Director:
The director is in charge of everything that happens on stage. S/he provides the overall vision and direction of the production
Dress rehearsal:
The final complete, unbroken run before opening night
Duet:
Music written for two performers to sing together
