Trial by Jury will be forty-five minutes of clever words and catchy tunes sung by a cast of New Zealand’s most promising singers.  You will get to be amongst the action, with seating in the public gallery and the dock or the bench. Tickets for this special presentation also include pre-performance drinks and nibbles to enjoy while real lawyers - the Canterbury Lawyers Choir – sing at selection of music.

The cast features all three of the 2018 Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists, fresh from performances in The Elixir of Love. Natasha Wilson plays the Plaintiff, Angelina, who plans to make her ex-fiancé pay for the pain he’s caused her and she knows exactly how to win over the crowd. The Defendant, Edwin, is played by Manase Latu, and he will have a hard time getting any sympathy from the Judge and Jury.

Canterbury-raised baritone James Harrison plays the Learned Judge who will guide the Jury (the Christchurch branch of the Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus) in their decision while Australian mezzo Deborah Rogers plays Counsel for Plaintiff and Samson Setu plays the Usher.

Former New Zealand Opera General Director Stuart Maunder has directed Trial by Jury in five different courtrooms (Bow Street Magistrates Court, Royal Courts of Justice London, Supreme Court of Western Australian, Central Police Court Sydney, County Court of Victoria) and returns to New Zealand especially to bring his production to Christchurch.
